DST vs. PES: Which Embroidery File Format Should You Choose?
DST (Tajima)
The closest thing to a universal standard in machine embroidery. Works with most commercial and semi-industrial machines regardless of brand.
Choose DST if: you're not 100% sure what your machine needs, or you use a Tajima, Barudan, or most multi-needle industrial machines.
Keep in mind: DST stores stitch data only no thread color info. Your machine will show generic color-block numbers, not the actual thread colors, so you'll need to match colors manually using the design's color chart.
PES (Brother)
Built for Brother and Babylock home embroidery machines. Stores thread color data directly in the file.
Choose PES if: you're using a Brother, Babylock, or Bernina home machine your machine's screen will show you the actual colors, making setup faster.
Keep in mind: not all PES versions are compatible across every machine generation if your machine is older, double-check the PES version support before buying a new one.
Quick decision guide
Home embroidery machine (Brother/Babylock): PES
Industrial or multi-brand machine: DST
Not sure / borrowed or shared machine: DST it's the safest default
One more tip
Most quality design shops (including ours) bundle multiple formats with a single purchase. So if you're unsure, grab the bundle that includes both DST and PES rather than guessing. It saves a re-download later if you switch machines.
